Mitch Tyson
Board of Advisors
Mitch Tyson is an experienced high tech executive and entrepreneur. He serves on a number of corporate, non-profit, and governmental advisory boards. He advises start-ups, early stage companies, VC’s, angel groups, and private equity firms. He also writes and lectures on clean energy, entrepreneurship, management, and the triple bottom line.
Mitch was CEO of Advanced Electron Beams (AEB) between 2005 and 2010. Mitch joined Advanced Electron Beams upon the completion of the company's Series A round of venture funding. AEB is an industrial energy efficiency company that supplies compact electron beam emitters that replace thermal and chemical processes, improving sustainability and reducing costs in a broad range of industries. During this period the company raised $50 million in venture funds and established a new business model and market strategy in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage packaging, industrial coating, and engineered materials industries. The company has shipped over 150 systems to 50 companies and has 12 OEM’s that have designed AEB emitters into their manufacturing systems.
In 2003 Mitch served as interim CEO at AmberWave Systems, a venture backed IP company developing a range of material science technologies for the semiconductor and solar industries.
Prior to that Mitch was the CEO of PRI Automation, a publicly traded corporation that supplied automation systems including hardware, software and services to the semiconductor industry. From 1987 to 2002, he held positions of increasing management responsibility, and helped transform PRI Automation from a small robotics manufacturer to the world's leading supplier of semiconductor fab automation systems. Mitch managed the growth of the company from $4 million to over $300 million in revenue, and guided the company through its successful IPO in 1994, international expansion, and acquisition by Brooks automation in 2002.
Previously, Mitch worked at GCA Corporation as Director of Product Management (1985-1987) and served as science advisor and legislative assistant for energy to U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas (1979-1985).
Mitch is a co-founder of the New England Clean Energy Council whose mission is to accelerate New England’s clean energy economy. He serves on the Executive Committee and heads the CEO Council. Mitch is also a founding member of the Progressive Business Leaders Network whose mission is to promote the best practices of business leaders committed to socially and environmentally responsible economic growth and is co-chair of its Energy/ Environment Working Group. He is a member of the Mass High Tech Council Board and serves as the head of the Clean Energy and Sustainability Team. Mitch also serves on the Advisory Council of Environment Northeast (ENE), a non-profit organization that researches and advocates innovative policies that tackle our environmental challenges while promoting sustainable economies.
Mitch also serves on the executive and governing boards of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and the John Adams Innovation Institute, a state agency focused on promoting the innovation economy and economic development in Massachusetts. He is also on the Massport Security Advisory Council and the Advisory board of the UMass Sustainable Enterprise and Regional Competitiveness Center, and recently served on the Governor’s Advanced Manufacturing Initiative Steering Committee.
Mitch has served on the board of ten public, private, and venture backed company boards, including firms in the areas of automation, CAD, LED’s, materials, semiconductor equipment, and sensors,. He currently serves on the board Photronics, Inc., a manufacturer of photomasks for the flat panel display and semiconductor industries and the advisory board of Greener U, an innovative energy services firm that helps universities lower costs and become more sustainable.
In 2008, the Mass High Tech Journal named Mitch a Mass High Tech All-Star for his leadership in and commitment to the clean energy sector. Mitch has lectured on entrepreneurship, sustainable business strategy, and various management topics at numerous universities and industry forums including: Brandeis, Boston University, MIT, North Shore Technology Council, Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, CERA Energy Innovation Pioneers Breakfast, and the CFO Roundtable. Mitch also launched the Energy Leaders Forum, a cleantech blog on the Mass High Tech Journal and New England Clean Energy Council websites.
He has a Bachelors of Science in Physics, a Masters of Science in Nuclear Engineering, and a second Masters of Science in Political Science, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
