At HB, Tech Starts at Home

The LigerBots celebrate their first-place finish at the WPI District Championships, their first big win of the season. The is headed to the FIRST Robotics World Championship next week.

It means a lot to see your son happy.

When they’re babies and little kids they seem to smile all the time. Every joke makes them giggle, every day is a new adventure. While trotting off to kindergarten even the idea of homework can make them happy.

But as they get older and adolescents settles in they get far more serious and self-conscious. The smiles become more difficult to earn and as parents we’re often faced with frustration, anger or indifference.

So when your 15-year-old son does something that makes him deeply happy, you pay attention.

Back in 2010 Todd Van Hoosear and I did a little consulting work for US FIRST, the organization that runs a number of robotics competitions. Soon after completing the project, I took my son to BU to watch the New England Regional Championship on his 11th birthday.

This year he found himself on his own robotics team having had a hand in building a robot and returned to BU. I watched him smile and feel accomplished from his scouting position, carefully tracking every robot on the field. I also felt his frustration when his team lost.

But now they’ve won again. His team, #2877, the LigerBots, will be headed to St. Louis for the FIRST Robotics World Championship. I know this will be a great experience for him and his team, as they’ll get the chance to see hundreds of robots that all took a different approach to solving the same task. This year’s task was to compete in a game called Aerial Assist, in which an alliance of three robots would work together to move a large exercise ball across a field using elements that include scooping up the ball, throwing it, catching it, passing it and shooting it with accuracy. The challenge included two modes, one in which the robot needs to work on its own using a set of pre-programmed instructions, and another that includes a team of drivers coordinating and playing the game. Oh, and they have six weeks to design and build the robot.

The result is a raucous good time watching six robots operated by 18 teenagers playing a game that is like something out of a science fiction movie.

Like the 2,500 or so other teams, the LigerBots spent hours planning and building, then weeks competing. Each competition involves multiple matches and multiple opportunities to both win and break the machine.

There has also been tremendous support from the team here at HB, who have offed both their cheers and their donation dollars to help get the team to St. Louis. The fact is, those young engineers who today built a robot that shoots a ball will tomorrow be the engineers who help change the world.

And that’s what HB’s clients are all about.

Newton, Mass.February 26, 2014 – Fragmented communications channels create barriers for companies needing to tell their stories and reach their audiences. In an important step toward breaking through these barriers, HB Agency, an integrated marketing and public relations firm, has acquired Winans Creative, a marketing, technology and digital development studio based in Easthampton, Mass. The acquisition will give businesses access to sophisticated marketing technology solutions to reach their clients, prospects and influencers on all screens.

HB clients will benefit from fully integrated marketing campaigns incorporating strategy, measurement, creative design and technology. Examples of new capabilities created by the acquisition include:

  • Analytics/marketing measurement solutions built to test and optimize campaigns in order to determine what drives leads and conversions

“Our clients market to customers who consume information using tablets, phones, laptops desktops, web-enabled televisions and more. HB’s acquisition of Winans Creative helps put client messages in those places, along with a measurement framework to assess and validate marketing programs,” said Nicolas Boillot, CEO, HB Agency. “Whether our team is helping persuade audiences through content or figuring out ways to bridge the gap from lead generation to sales, technology is critical. The Winans acquisition means more integrated and enhanced website development, the rollout of branded mobile/web applications, branding across more channels, tracking more data and having more of marketing aligned under the same strategies.”

The acquisition, HB’s second in the past six months, marks the firm’s commitment to helping its clients influence the right audiences at the right time and place, using the best media on the right device to maximize results for every campaign or message.

Winans Creative brings a strong history of successful design and digital development, complementing HB’s existing creative services team. The firm will become HB’s development team, delivering marketing messages across platforms using apps, mobile, web and custom-created digital channels to solve client marketing problems.

“Winans Creative has been exploring the best use of technology in marketing for nearly a decade. Integrating with HB allows for delivery of the right messages using the right media through the right channels,” said Blair Winans, founder, Winans Creative. “The HB team is so robust, guiding its clients in customer engagement, sales enablement, lead generation, digital development and delivery, and more. Putting our resources together creates an agency with resources most other firms cannot match.”

Winans Creative founder Blair Winans joins HB as vice president, digital development. The combined company is headquartered in Newton, Mass., with an office in Easthampton, Mass.

HB Agency Launches Integrated Marketing Measurement Offering to Analyze PR, Social and More

Newton, Mass.February 19, 2014 – Public relations measurement is dominated by web and social media metrics that are not integrated, do not reflect the business’ bottom line and do not represent the true value of public relations programs. To address this, HB Agency, an integrated marketing and public relations firm, has launched HB SightPlan, a suite of measurement and analytics reporting services for both one-time and ongoing marketing effectiveness measurement.

The company’s offering, which can be engaged on a standalone basis or as part of an integrated HB Agency PR or content marketing program, clarifies companies’ business goals, aligns marketing program priorities and tracks the marketing team’s progress toward these goals.

HB SightPlan is ideal for marketing programs that combine both awareness-raising efforts, which have historically been difficult to quantify and measure, and content-rich sales and lead-generation programs that PR now drives.

The HB SightPlan offering includes consultation and planning sessions, a variety of customizable regular reports, on-demand reporting and research support, and ongoing program check-in and realignment sessions to make sure businesses get the most from their investment in marketing measurement and analysis.

The comprehensiveness of the HB SightPlan delivers meaningful reporting for all types of businesses, from startups that need a social marketing sanity check or brainstorming before a major launch, to large and mid-sized corporations ready to re-think, realign and improve the efficiency of their marketing efforts.

The regular reporting options offered in the HB SightPlan vary depending on marketing measurement needs and business goals, but can include any of the following reports, which are available on a standalone basis or integrated into an ongoing program:

  • Content Marketing Assessment
  • Customer Intelligence Report
  • Competitive Intelligence Report
  • Media Intelligence Report
  • Share of Voice Report

“We’re suffering from marketing metrics overload,” said Mark O’Toole, managing director, public relations & content marketing at HB Agency. “Traditional metrics like ad value equivalency don’t capture the true value of public relations, social media statistics rarely impact the bottom line, and web analytics often only capture a partial snapshot of a customer or prospect’s overall engagement with a brand. It’s time for an integrated approach to marketing and PR measurement, one that can accurately reflect the value of our efforts. By integrating HB SightPlan into our existing and new client engagements, we have a much more complete picture of the contributions that our influencer relations efforts have for our clients.”

HB SightPlan conforms to the PR measurement guidelines established by professional associations and international standards bodies that include the PRSA, IABC, CPRF, WOMMA and others. For more information on HB SightPlan, and to download HB Agency’s new ebook on marketing measurement, visit http://bit.ly/sightplan.

VDA Productions and HB Agency Blend Technology and Creative to Deliver Engaging Trade Show Experience to 14,000+ Attendees at Las Vegas Event

Media Hub Design Debuts for Social and Traditional Media Engagement

BOSTON, June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — VDA Productions, the premier provider of 3D marketing experiences and design solutions that bring brands to life partnered with HB Agency, an integrated branding, marketing, and public relations firm, to complete a 14,000+ attendee event at the Venetian, Las Vegas. An immersive Media Hub, designed to serve as a central media and information gathering arena, debuted at the annual international trade show and exhibition. VDA and HB collaborated on booth designs and creative service offerings for the Media Hub that provided an exclusive environment for social and traditional media engagement.

The Media Hub, the location of choice for recognized industry influencers such as SiliconAngle, InformationWeek, and TechNewsWorld, was a branded environment that included a stage for Q&A, TV studio for interviews and live streaming, pre-set locations with soft-seating conducive for blogging, an “invitation only” press room with daily press track, and LED monitors that played interviews, product news updates, and Twitter feeds on a continuous loop for maximum information sharing.

“The Media Hub was a centralized location for social media engagement and information sharing,” said David G. Breen, Principal Designer at VDA Productions. “It was developed to mimic the look and feel of the rest of our designs and the overall show floor theme, feeding the need to provide a tech-savvy environment specifically dedicated to real-time engagement. VDA works on the largest Big Data events in the country, and we understand the need for our designs to attract attention and drive interaction on social platforms. The Media Hub provided a forum for building long-term relationships with the attendee via an online community, and not just within the confines of the physical event space.”

“In a trade show setting, companies are challenged with creating inviting experiences to draw attendees to their booths. A unique experience is necessary, but it must reflect the event theme and maintain consistency with the brand’s overall message,” said Kevin Hart, President, Creative Director at HB. “HB and VDA work closely to develop experiences that maximize attendee engagement, opportunities for conversation and social media.”

Trade shows are an essential part of the marketing mix, offering companies effective platforms for leveraging social media efforts, strengthening client relationships, acquiring new business, and increasing ROI. All are much needed elements for continued growth and companywide success.

Newton, MA – May 30, 2013 – Great stories resonate with us our entire lives. Too many businesses ignore their stories despite knowing that great stories are a proven way to make personal, lasting connections with customers and prospects. Nicolas Boillot, CEO of HB Agency, an integrated marketing agency, is author of the new book I Killed a Rabid Fox with a Croquet Mallet—Making Your Business Stories Compelling and Memorable. “Businesses don’t know how to leverage their great stories, which are often ignored or forgotten,” Boillot says. “The opportunity cost can be astronomical, when so many businesses have great stories that could create long-lasting impressions with customers and prospects.”

In Rabid Fox, Boillot introduces readers to story creation that can inform their communications with customers and potential clients. The book provides:

  • Clear guidance on how to build a compelling and memorable story;
  • A workbook that businesspeople can use to create their own stories;
  • Examples of large multinational corporations and small businesses that have used compelling stories to increase their sales, including companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Ben & Jerry’s; and,
  • Advice on how businesses can identify their best stories and use them to solidify their customer relationships and attract more customers.
